The Music Ministry at UUCOC
At UUCOC, music is an integral part of everything we do! It is not only the glue that binds various aspects of the service together, but it is also the spirit that flows through the entire process, infusing it with beauty. Our music unites us as a congregation and takes us deeper into the experience of worship.
Our music is fun!
Dancing is allowed and encouraged.
¡Y a veces cantamos en Español!
Whether it is an acapella pagan chant, a well-known Christian hymn, a current hit on the radio, a street protest song, or some snazzy jazz, music is in our collective soul and we like to express it with fearless and reckless abandon!
However, you don’t have to be a musician or even able to carry a tune in order to enjoy the music at UUCOC. All you need is a beating heart, the ability to breathe air, and a willingness to make a joyful noise. Most of our congregational singing includes hymns, songs and chants right out of the Unitarian Universalist hymn books. These are a treasure trove of beautiful tunes with poetic lyrics that will also make you think. We augment our services with many different types of music from numerous genres.
In addition to our regular service music, we enjoy a choir made up of talented and energetic singers, some professional musicians, and some “regular folks,” who all share a love for singing. There is no audition to join the choir. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm in the Hope Building as needed. We warm up on Sunday mornings at about 9:20am and rehearse music for the service. Some Sundays the choir gets to sit back and enjoy the sounds of local talent bringing in their special brand of music.
It’s all good!
